  • •Do you have an interest in history?
•Do you want to protect the symbols and ideas that have made America great?
•Do you want to contribute to your local community and help young people appreciate their American heritage?
•Do you want to honor your ancestors who fought and sacrificed to establish freedom in America?

Membership in the SAR is open to all boys and men who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who supported the War for American Independence. If you think you qualify, or simply want more information, please contact:

    President Rod Mullen: rmullen@nccumc.org or
    Registrar Bob Ervin: bervin001@nc.rr.com

In the SAR we prove the bloodline connection from the applicant to the patriot. However, all dates and places of the five events in a generation are reported. The five events are: Birth, Death and Marriage of the line carrier and the Birth and Death of the spouse. More detailed information on application procedures and membership requirements can be found in brochures on the SAR Website.

Many people think that in order to join the Sons of the American Revolution you must be descended through the male line from the soldier to the applicant. Not so. The patriot may be your mother's mother's mother's father's mother's father, or any formula back and forth between male and female. Some of the patriots who served the cause were, in fact, women. Not everyone who served in the American Revolution were soldiers. Many were too old to take up arms, and served instead by joining Committees of Safety, holding public office, supplying arms or food, serving as nurses and doctors, or serving otherwise in any of a hundred different ways.

We are NOT a group of snobbish individuals sitting around talking about their distinguished ancestors. For the most part our Revolutionary War ancestors were simply hard working farmers who took up arms to fight for our independence. The objects of the society are patriotic, historical and educational, and we seek to perpetuate the memory of our Revolutionary War ancestors while preserving and furthering the ideals for which they fought.

Some of the things we do are:

•Honor individuals for outstanding and unusual patriotic achievement on a national, regional and local level.
•Honor persons for outstanding bravery and self sacrifice in the face of imminent danger.
•Honor members of the United States Congress for outstanding service to the nation.
•Honor outstanding high school students annually with the presentation of a Good Citizenship Award.
•Honor outstanding Junior and Senior ROTC cadets annually with the presentation of the ROTC Award.
•Honor Law Enforcement officials for outstanding service with a Law Enforcement Award.
•Select an outstanding Eagle Scout annually at the branch, state and national level. The national winner receives a college scholarship.
•Honor an outstanding student for winning the Knight Essay Contest.
    •Assist veterans in Veterans Hospitals.
•Conduct a national historical orations contest annually.
•Sponsor Boy Scout troops and chapters of the Children of the American Revolution.
