Greetings Compatriots and Potential Compatriots!

Thanks you for visiting the website of the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter of the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NCSSAR). The National Society SAR was founded in 1889 as a “fraternal genealogical order of gentlemen". The Society was dedicated to the goals of promoting the history and accomplishments of the American War of Independence (1775-1883). The SAR also served to provide fellowship among the descendants of Revolutionary War Patriots. Since many significant battles of the war were fought in the Carolinas, the North Carolina Society SAR has performed a critical role in publicizing these facts across the state.

 The namesake of our Chapter, Major General Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), provided critical support for the victory. He was an experienced French Army officer who in 1777 volunteered to serve in the Continental Army without pay. After his wounding at the Battle of Brandywine (Pennsylvania), he became Washington’s protégé at Valley Forge. He then returned to his homeland in 1779 where his influence in  the royal court was key in getting French military units to America. Finally, he held an important independent command during the victorious Yorktown Campaign (Virginia) in 1781, which ultimately ended the war.

Consequently in 1783, Fayetteville NC was re-named for him to honor his role in the birth of our nation.
